Shooting Stars Go WNBA
The Wisconsin Shooting Stars Girls 13u, 14u, and 15u recently took part in the North Tartan Meltdown tournament at Minnetonka High School and Hopkins High School in Minnesota. After participating in the initial day of the tournament all three teams had a wonderful opportunity to take in a Saturday evening WNBA game with the Minnesota Lynx hosting the defending WNBA champions Phoenix Mercury starring Diana Taurasi (pictures in gallery 1 on right).
Our group of Shooting Stars players, families, and friends had great seats to watch what turned out to be a great game. The players were able to sit in courtside seats, while the family and friends all had seats with in the first 4 rows of the court. The Shooting Stars were part of a crowd of more than 8,500, which saw a game with 9 lead changes and was tied 8 times including the end of regulation and the end of the 1st overtime session. The game was not decided until the 2nd overtime with the Phoenix Mercury pulling out a 127-124 victory.
The victorious Mercury were lead by Candice Dupree's 32 points and 16 rebounds. Diana Taurasi pitched in 31 points, which included a perfect 14-14 from the free-throw line. The Lynx's Seimone Augustus scored a season-high 36 points and WNBA all-star Rebecca Brunson scored a double-double for the Lynx with 17 rebounds and 19 points.
Not only did we have an opportunity to watch a great game, but we also had two other special perks. At half time our three Shooting Stars teams were able to line the tunnel while the WNBA players reentered the arena and giving high fives to the Lynx players and coaches (pictures in gallery 2 on right). Jeanne Dishaw even got on the Jumbo Screen during the game.
Following the game we had the privilege of having the Lynx all-star Rebecca Brunson talk with our group. She shared with the group the kind of effort she needed to put forth to reach the WNBA. Rebecca also fielded personal and professional questions from the group. Following the discussion she took time to take pictures with the group and even sign a few autographs.
Thanks Rebecca!
